Monroe's Crossroads,
Fayetteville, Cumberland County, N.C.

March 10, 1865

On March 10, 1865, the 9th Michigan Cavalry Regiment was noted as being in Monroe’s Crossroads (Turner 3-4). Monroe’s Crossroads is found in Fayetteville, Cumberland County. Depending on the route taken, the distance between Fayetteville and the regiment’s last noted movement in Solemn Grove is 46+ miles (Google Maps). 

 

Skirmishes took place in Fayetteville on March 11 and March 13; although, the 9th Michigan Cavalry Regiment is not listed as an involved unit (“North Carolina Civil War Battles”). 

 

However, the regiment may have been present at a skirmish on March 15 near Smith’s Mill (“North Carolina Civil War Battles”). At the time, Smith’s Mill was found on the Black River in Sampson County. Sampson County is adjacent to Cumberland County.
